Mark Urbina is originally from the Philippines and moved to United States at the age of 14. Mr. Urbina graduated from Rio Grande City High School and was a member of the Mighty Rattler Band. He continued his passion in music by attending Texas State University in San Marcos, where he studied percussion under John Lopez, Eric Martin and Genaro Gonzalez. He studied conducting under John Stansberry and Howard Hudiburg. Mr. Urbina received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree and graduated with honors, magna cum laude, in 2005.
This is his third year as an assistant director at Friendswood Junior High School. He directs the Concert Band and oversees the percussion program from 6th to 8th grade. This past school year, the Symphonic, Honors and Concert Band Percussion received a Superior rating at the Oak Ridge Percussion Ensemble Festival.
Mr. Urbina’s professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Percussive Arts Society, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Society and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity. He credits much of his success to the support of his family and his wife Madelle.
